Honeydew melon is a very popular melon and it is widely used in recipes. This melon contains several essential nutrients and is beneficial for a healthy lifestyle. However, a few regular eaters of honeydew melon face stomach disorders like gas, bloating, and constipation.

Some people also get affected with heartburn after the consumption of dishes that contain honeydew. So, is it true that honeydew upset stomach? Does honeydew melon cause gas, bloating, constipation, or heartburn?

Does Honeydew Melon Cause Gas?

Gas is a very common health disorder in several people throughout the world. So, what causes gas? Studies have shown that consuming high fiber foods boosts gas production in healthy adults (1).

Also, high fat foods can trigger gastrointestinal problems(GI) (2). This in turn may cause gas. On the other hand, a 100 gram serving of honeydew melon contains 0.8 grams of dietary fiber and 0.14 grams of fat (3).

So, honeydew melon does not cause gas because it contains a little amount of gas-producing nutrients aka fiber and fat.

Does Honeydew Melon Cause Bloating?

The main reason for bloating is the intake of fiber-rich foods. Also, foods with a high FODMAP value increase the risk of bloating, especially in patients with IBS. According to studies, consumption of a low FODMAP diet reduces the risk of bloating (4).

However, honeydew melon is low in both fiber and FODMAP value and due to this honeydew melon does not cause bloating. That’s why honeydew melon is not directly associated with the occurrence of bloating.

But when does honeydew melon cause bloating? Consumption of fiber-rich and high FODMAP diets with honeydew melon may cause bloating. However, this is not related to honeydew consumption.

Does Honeydew Melon Cause Constipation?

Consumption of high fiber can increase stool frequency, and soften stool (5). Moreover, another study has shown that intake of fiber can improve the frequency of stool in patients with constipation (6).

That’s why fiber is an essential nutrient for constipation cure. However, honeydew melon is not a rich source of dietary fiber. Because of this honeydew melon can cause constipation if you are not consuming enough fiber from other foods.

Also, honeydew melon contains very little amount of magnesium. Magnesium is a well-known nutrient for constipation cure and smooth bowel movement. This is another reason for the occurrence of constipation on a diet rich in honeydew melon.

Can Honeydew Melon Cause Heartburn?

Normal consumption of honeydew melon does not cause heartburn. However, surplus consumption of honeydew melon may cause acid reflux or heartburn in healthy adults.

Honeydew melon is a rich source of vitamin C.  According to studies consumption of vitamin c or ascorbic acid can cause heartburn (7). That’s why too much intake of honeydew melon may cause heartburn through vitamin C overload.
